Just after eating a delicious chocolate chip scone at my favorite coffee shop, a woman sat down at the table across from me. She placed the child wrapped around her torso on a chair next to hers.
SMACK!—the child fell and wailed, WAILED, wailed!!
SUDDENLY the mother popped out her breast and force breast fed the little girl.
Of course, breast feeding is natural. And, if a child is hungry, why should a mother deny him or her the right to be fed?
This little girl, however, was not hungry. She was merely rattled.
I’m trying to understand the mother’s choice:
"She’s still crying, and she won’t be quiet. Maybe she’s hungry."
Out came the boob.
Growing up Catholic taught me about propriety, so it was only natural for me to turn away quickly. But this woman was completely unabashed about having her breast hang out. She didn’t care if I saw (and, apparently, neither did her husband). She just wanted to make her child happy.
I will admit, because I want my writing to be more honest, that I took a second look. It wasn’t lustful and it wasn’t in disgust. I just wanted to take in the scene as casually as this mother chose to expose her breasts for the sake of her child.
